Right, I think we have all moved on from Chris Hughton’s acrimonious dismissal as Newcastle boss and it’s time to concentrate on Alan Pardew and his new tenure as manager of the Tyneside Club.
Pardew made no secret that his task first and foremost as Newcastle manager was securing Premier League football for his club for another season. It strikes me that there is a certain lack of ambition from the former Charlton and Southampton boss.
If I were a Newcastle fan, which I am not, I would want to be hearing Pardew saying that he wanted to qualify for Europe, especially considering the team find themselves sitting rather comfortably in 8th position in the Premier League.
With the new owners of Blackburn Rovers sacking ‘Big Sam’ only recently as they did not believe that he was the man to take them to the dizzying heights of the Premier League, does this exaggerate Pardew’s lack of desire and purpose?
Having said this, Pardew has publicly stated that he is keen to hold onto the likes of Steven Taylor, Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Andy Carroll. This must be music to the ears of every Newcastle fan, as in those 4 players they have boys that want to play for the club and will give their all on a weekly basis.
Now I’m never one to constantly put a professional down, so I must say that Pardew deserves time to find his feet, understand his players and, arguably more importantly, the fans of this great club.
With his experience and considerable tactical awareness it could be argued that he could prove to be a very decent Newcastle manager. After all, Chris Hughton was an immensely popular figure in Newcastle and was one of the nicest personalities in football, well-liked by his peers, and respected by his players. He was never regarded as a great tactician, but rather a fantastic man-manager with acute motivational skills. This may have been considered as less than ambitious paving the way for Mr Pardew.
